Coming Together in Times of Tragedy

As a member of the Stafford Township Fire Company, it was an honor for me to work with the men and women of that department through one of my toughest duties in 25 years as a firefighter.   These men and women were away from thier loved ones for days on end to respond to the emergencies created by the Super Storm we call Sandy.  They are truly a very special kind of people!  They are and will always remain my second family.

This storm also created many more heroes although most of them would never even think of it that way.  The Electric and Gas company crews that have and continue to work feverishly to get our utilities up and running again.  I have seen crews from Wisconsin, Alabama, Ohio, Texas and more going to work and never asking any questions.

The emergency workers from NJ, PA, FEMA, OEM and more selfishly volunteering thier time to come and offer us a hand in our time of need.

People pouring in from all over giving donations and feeding the families and firemen at Stafford Fire Co.  We had a gentleman bring us donuts, 4 dozen....from MARYLAND!  I had a man bring in 8-10 cases of water , food and clothes.  I spoke with him for a few minutes to learn that he has a home on LBI and did not have any idea of what kind of damage was done but he was there with us donating!

The neighbors helping neighbors.  Wether it was providing shelter, a hot meal, warm clothes a hot shower.  These things were done again, with no questions asked.

Businesses opening thier doors  and donating food, clothes, and so much more.

I really believe in the Pay It Forward theory.  I know there will be so much good to come out of this very hard time.  I have seen it with my own eyes.

The events over the past week are something that I can only hope I never have to deal with again in my lifetime.  However, I know as long as we all continue to work together there is nothing we cant overcome.  The Jersey Shore will be back, stronger , more beautiful and vibrant than ever.
