Don’t miss this coming weekend’s Science Saturday – Feb. 15 – at the Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts and Sciences, as Viking Village’s Karter Larsen and culinary teacher Ian Smith team up to explain how seafood gets from the ocean to the plate. For the eighth consecutive winter, the Foundation’s Science Committee has organized a series of interactive presentations on matters of the environment, science and sustainability.

Each session, presented in an easy-to-understand format, is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the LBIF’s main building, at 120 Long Beach Blvd. in Loveladies.“Did you know Viking Village in Barnegat Light is one of the East Coast’s most productive commercial fishing seaports?” asked Amy Carreño, LBIF public programs coordinator. This Saturday, third-generation fisherman Karter Larsen “will tell many entertaining tales, (and) you will learn how your favorite fish is harvested in the Atlantic Ocean.”Smith, who teaches at the Ocean County Vocational Technical School, “will teach you how to prepare the fresh seafood you catch, with hands-on cooking demonstrations and delicious samples to enjoy,” Carreño added.
In addition, A Little Bite of Italy, of Surf City, will provide fresh-baked breakfast treats at no charge at this session.Admission is free for Foundation members. A $5 donation per person is requested from all other attendees. For more information, call 609-494-1241 or visit lbifoundation.org
