We've passed the midway point of October and are heading into the home stretch of the month towards Halloween. On Long Beach Island this year we have been blessed with mostly gorgeous weather perfect for walk on the beach and bay side strolls. It is with a curious eye that I turn to the question of which Halloween costumes are the most popular this year. As usual, most of the top picks are expected but there are always a few surprises.

Television shows and feature films heavily influence the top costumes, with 5 out of the top 10 being from shows or movies. While also this year there's a couple of tried and true themes.

Coming in at number 10 is the mermaid costume. This one to me was a surprise with no major new character or mermaid themed show coming out but despite that, the allure of the siren sings strong.

Two old standbys come in at numbers 8 and 9, the ever popular hippie and unicorn respectively.

Number 7 is the first of our film or tv related costumes. Baywatch lifeguard costumes from the film starring Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron.

Number 6 are costumes of the myriad of characters from the uber popular Game of Thrones series. We will see many Mother of Dragons soon!

Of course , this list wouldn't be complete without Wonder Woman, at number 5. The super awesome super hero will be out and about at all the parties and trick or treating.

Number 4 is an odd surprise. Giraffe costume's apparently were the fourth most sought after costume this year but as to why???? Who knows!

Number 3 are costume from Beauty and the Beast. With the live action version of this tale as old as time out, it is no wonder kids and adults alike will don a Belle or Beast costume amongst other popular characters.

Characters from the Netflix series Stranger Things beat out all the others above with the second most sought after costumes. A surprise to me but the popularity of Netflix shows cannot be denied.

And finally, at number 1, and to me by far the scariest costume of the year is the character from Stephen King's IT, Pennywise! The terrifying demon clown will scare all across America this year!

Happy Halloween!!!
