A Day in the Life of a Listing Agent Selling His Own Home with Pets
So, it was another gorgeous Saturday with another showing scheduled for 1:30pm. My wife, Robyn, and I are going through our usual routine of making sure the house is spotless and minimalized, setting the lights appropriately set, extracting our two Boston Terriers, Henry and Louis, along with their crates, beds, blankets, bowls, and treats and finally, my wife straightening up the pillows on the couches. Without fail one pup must jump back up on the couch in the last five minutes making for a last-minute adjustment of the pillows. When Henry and Louis and the crates, etc. are loaded into the truck, it’s time to head out for a potential one-hour drive around the town in which we’ve lived for 21 years.
We were fortunate that the potential buyers were on time as I got the usual notification that the key box had been opened by the showing agent. They were finished within 45 minutes. After circling around the neighborhood once or twice, we were able to drive back to the house and unload the puppies, the crates, etc.
Hoping to receive positive feedback and an offer, we proceeded to open a bottle of wine, prepare some cheese and crackers, and sit down at the island to relax. That’s when I got the phone call from the buyer’s agent. The buyers were still in town and wanted to come back to look at the house a second time.
What great news! The fire drill was underway for a 15-minute commitment of allowing the buyers back into the house. At three times the normal speed of doing something we’ve done many times already, we gathered the crates, bedding, etc., the dogs and fixed the couch pillows one more time and headed out for another drive around town.
Just another day in the life of trying to sell the house you still live in! I have gained even more appreciation for what Sellers have to go through in the process.
I grew up in New Rochelle, New York and have lived in Hartford, Connecticut and Clearwater, Florida and spent summers in the Hamptons and Montauk. In 1991, I met my wife, Robyn, and my step-son, Ge....
