It's that time of year when we throw everything but the kitchen sink in the car including our pets and set out on family vacations.   If you're an animal lover like myself,  you're just as concerned about your pet's safety and happiness as I am.  Here are a few tips to help you prepare for a safe and relaxing trip with your dog:

1. Trial Run:

Before "embarking" on your first road trip, perhaps try a short trip around town to see how your beloved pet reacts.  Addressing circumstances such as anxiety and car sickness beforehand can make for a much smoother stress-free ride when its time to leave for vacation.

2. All Riders must keep heads & paws inside the vehicle at all times:

I'm pretty confident that all dogs love sticking their heads out of car windows, but did you know studies show that by dogs riding this way they are prone to ear damage and lung infections?

3. Prepare for the Worst:

Put a second tag on your pet's collar with the address and phone number of where you'll be staying on your trip.

4. Pit Stops:

The American Veterinary Medical Association advises pet owners to stop every 2 -3 hours to allow their dogs to use the bathroom and get some exercise.

5. Hydrate:

Keep a gallon of cold water on hand to make sure your furry friend has plenty to drink during the trip.

6. Never leave them unattended:

Did you know on an 85-degree day with the windows cracked a car can reach up to 110 degrees inside in 10 minutes?

7. Essentials:

Don't forget to pack some of Fido's favorite toys, leash, bowls, food and crate/bed.

There are 2 places dogs are known to frequent on Long Beach Island:

On the north end, there's a dog park in Barnegat Light located at 15 W 10th street.  A permit is required and costs $30.00 annually and $10.00 weekly.  Click here for more details.

If you are on the south end, there is an unofficial Beach Haven Doggy Bay on Taylor Avenue where you can always find wet wagging happy tails.

Over on the mainland, bring your furry friend to "Yappy Hour" at The Mainland Kitchen & Pub!  Located in the Beer Garden only; all well mannered and leashed pups are welcome every Monday and Tuesday from 4 PM to 7 PM (weather permitting)
