LBI Shuttle Buses To Begin And GatorAid Too
Long Beach Island’s free shuttle buses will return to the Boulevard for Memorial Day weekend, and will continue on an abbreviated, weekends-only schedule until resuming a full-time schedule starting June 26. Seven buses will run the length of the Island this summer, with another, larger bus potentially joining the fleet.
The buses will operate from 3 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Friday, May 26, and from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. from Saturday, May 27, through Monday, Memorial Day, May 29.
From June 2-25, the shuttles run Fridays from 3 p.m. to 11 p.m., and Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m.
Beginning June 26, until Sept. 4, hours are 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
The buses will also be available on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from Sept. 8 to Oct. 1, and from Oct. 6-9.
During Monday’s Long Beach Township Board of Commissioners meeting, Commissioner Joseph Lattanzi, who conceived the program, said 80,000 people rode the shuttle last year. He expects that number to increase this year.
He added, “We’ve gotten some grant money, and Paul (Vereb, retired township police captain) and Angela (Andersen, township sustainability coordinator) are working on some more grants” to help fund the program.
The township is also purchasing three new John Deere Gator utility vehicles for use in what Lattanzi sees as a “complementary program” to the shuttles. The Gators are used through the summer months to transport individuals who need assistance over the wider, replenished ocean beaches to reach the waterfront. “We’re calling it ‘GatorAid,’ unofficially,” Lattanzi quipped.
