It goes without saying that in this "Gotta Have It Now" era we live in, people are inundated with more stuff than we know what to do with. As big box discount stores reign supreme-- home we go with trunks packed to the brim of ten pound bags of sugar, packs of paper towels large enough to absorb the water around Joey's during a lite rain, and that 9 Foot Teddy Bear...
Regardless if a buyer is downsizing or upgrading-- they need space for their stuff too! However, if your closets, basement and attics are overflowing with furniture, boxes and holiday decorations, that potential buyer is going to fail to see where all of their stuff is going to go and move on to the next house. Keep those spaces neat, tidy and organized while your house is for sale.
Here are a few tips:
1. Can't get rid of your grandparents furniture because your holding on to it for your kids some day? Great. Rent a climate controlled storage unit to store all bulky, excess furniture while your house is on the market. Also move unnecessary holiday decorates and boxes of memories not needed in the next 3-6 months while your house is on the market.
2. Space Bags are your friend. If you have an overabundance of blankets, sheets, beach towels, stuffed animals--store them in space bags and suck the air out to make them flat. Store them in the storage unit or neatly under a bed or closet.
3. If it is winter, pack up your summer wardrobe. Or vice versa. Remove empty hangers. If you throw your shoes on the bottom of the closet, invest in a shoe rack.
4. De-clutter, de-clutter, de-clutter. Go see a model home for sale in your area. Take note that there are not seven bottles of hairspray on the bathroom counter and most certainly no boxes of cereal on the kitchen counter. Although you live in your home, you want it to be show-ready at all times. De-clutter allows for open spaces and the buyer can envision themselves living there with their stuff.
