Sleep Apnia Linked To Mental Decline
This is a report put out by Debora Hosiptal on the effects of sleep apnea if left untreated. In addition to its effects on your heart, a new study links heavy snoring and sleep apnea—a common disorder in which sufferers have one or more pauses in breathing while sleeping—with memory and thinking problems. The study, published in the journalNeurology, found that those with breathing problems during sleep were more likely to develop memory and thinking problems at younger ages than their well-rested peers. They also found, however that treating such issues with a CPAP machine (a common sleep apnea treatment that supplies constant, steady air pressure) staved off the mental decline for about 10 years.
If you have sleep apnea, making changes in your daily activities might be all the treatment you need. These include:
Avoiding alcohol and medicines that make you sleepy.They make it harder for your throat to stay open while you sleep.
Losing weight if you need to.Weight loss can improve symptoms.
Sleeping on your side instead of your back.
Using nasal sprays or allergy medicines to keep your nasal passages open at night.Talk with your doctor about these treatments before using them.
