Safety First As The Holiday Season Approaches

Tis’ the season for decorating and making merry but each year preventable fires caused by Christmas trees and holiday decorations bring tragedy to families.  Take these steps to make sure your family’s holiday is a jolly one:

  • Artificial trees should be flame retardant.

  • Live trees should be fresh. Check to make sure needles are not brittle or shedding.

  • All trees should be a minimum of 3 feet from any heat source (fireplaces, radiators, heating vents & lights).

  • Tree stands should be full of water at ALL times.

  • Holiday lighting should carry the endorsement of an independent testing lab.  Worn or broken cords should be replaced.

  • Avoid stringing together too many strands of lights.  Check the box for the manufacturer’s recommendation.

  • Never leave a lit tree unattended.  Lights should be unplugged when you go to bed or leave the house.

  • Fire professionals recommend trees not be left up any longer than two weeks.

  • Do not leave a dismantled tree in the garage, porch or on the side of the house.  Dried trees are highly flammable; discard immediately.

All the best for a happy and SAFE holiday season.
