Nuts About Heart Health

Every year in the United States, 1 in 4 deaths results from heart disease. One recommended way to help prevent heart disease: Eat nuts. As part of a heart-healthy diet, nuts help reduce low-density lipo protein (LDL) or “bad” cholesterol levels. While nuts can be expensive, a recent study found peanuts and peanut butter can be just as effective as their higher-priced counterparts.
Researchers looked at the diets of 200,000 low-income men and women in the United States and China, finding that nut consumption was linked with lower risk of premature death from heart disease and other causes. The group eating the most nuts, peanuts and peanut butter (about 2 tablespoons a day) had a 20 percent lower risk of early death from heart disease compared with the group eating the least amount of nuts.
Although the study didn’t discuss the nuts’ salt content, experts recommend opting for unsalted nuts to avoid increasing sodium intake.
