For those of you who were a fan of Ellroy's first LA Quartet; PERFIDIA is the prequel.  Ellroy promises to deliver three more.  Giving us LA Quartet number two; as it convulses with the news of Pearl Harbor and lurches into the WW11.  Russell  Crowe, in his break out roll of Buzz Meeks, in the movie LA Confidential; gave us our first mass market taste of Ellroy's raw depiction of LA, in the '50's.  Many of those characters are included in Perfidia.  The word, loosely defined as treachery, and also a Glenn Miller hit at the time; sums up the book.  Written in Ellroy's snapping, staccato style; the sentences and dialogue crackle with an electricity, that launches you from the opening paragraph, down a twisting, turning rabbit hole of multiple plots, intrigue, double cross, backstabbing and survival alliances.  The story plays across the pages like a battle, and is played out like one until the last page; leaving you exhausted.  Can't wait for the next one.
