more proof that kicking the habit has no age limit: a new study has found that even smokers who quit in their 60s can lengthen their life expectancy. regardless of age, all smokers benefit from quitting, says epidemiologist sarah nash, lead researcher of the study, which analyzed data from a joint aarp and national institutes of health survey. and no matter when they stopped smoking, people who quit were always at lower risk of death relative to those who continued to smoke into their 70s. survey subjects were tracked from 2004-05 through 2011. only 12 percent of those who never smoked died, compared with 33 percent of those who continued to smoke, and among those who quit in their 60s, 23 percent fewer died compared with those who did not quit.
