Double Treat Of Super Moon In January 2018

Moon lover's will get a double treat in the first month of 2018.  Although most of us will be looking into the sky for fireworks or watching that big glittery ball descend in Time's Square,  New Year's Day will feature a moon that is brighter and appears much larger than our typical full moon.

The term given to full moons which happen when the moon reaches its closest orbit is a "Supermoon".  Although "Supermoons" are typically 7% to 14% brighter than normal it creates a great opportunity for photographers to take some photos and star gazers to awe the brighter than usual glow.

A slightly less elliptical orbit with the earth creates the situation for a "Supermoon".  When the moon is at it's closest point also known as "Perigee" we see the "Supermoon" in the sky.

Even though you should miss the "Supermoon" on the evening of the 1st of January another lunar treat will occur later on in the month.  The evening of the 30th of January we will be able to see a  blue moon rising and reaching it's fullness at approx. 8:37 am EST January 31st.  The Blue moon is a full moon that happens to occur twice in the same month.  This only occurs about once every two and a half to three years though it doesn't actually look any different than any typical full moon.   This Blue moon will occur on the same night (or morning depending where you are located) as a total Lunar eclipse.  This eclipse will commence about 6:48 EST.  If it's still dark in your area you should be able to get a glimpse of it................. You can check whether or not you'll be actually view the eclipse by checking your location-specific times by using the "https://www.timeanddate.com/eclipse/lunar/2018-january-31" website.
