Every year, fire departments around the country respond to house fires caused by improper care of Christmas trees.  Here are a few pointers to make sure you have a very merry and safe holiday this year.

Choosing the best tree:
If you have an artificial tree, make sure it is labeled, certified, or identified by the manufacture as a fire retardant tree.
Choose a tree with fresh, green pliable needles that do not fall off when touched.
Placing the tree:
Before placing the tree in its stand, cut off 1-2 inches from the base of the trunk.  This will allow water to be absorbed easily into the trunk of the tree.
Place the tree AT LEAST 3 feet away from any heat source.  Fireplaces, radiators, candles, heat vents, lights or lamps.
Make sure the tree is not blocking any exit routes.
Add water to the tree stand.  Make sure to keep the stand full at all times.
Lighting the tree:
Use lights that have a label of an independent testing laboratory.  Lights will be labeled as indoor or outdoor.  Make sure you are using indoor lights.
Replace any string of lights that are worn, broken, frayed or have loose or broken bulbs.
Do not exceed 3 strings of lights per outlet.  Refer to manufacturers label as to how many strings of LED lights are recommended.
NEVER USE CANDLES to decorate a tree!
Whenever you go to bed or are leaving the house, make sure to turn off the lights.
After Christmas:
Make sure to get rid of the tree if it begins to drop needles.  This is a sign that the tree is drying out and becoming a greater fire hazard.

I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!
