Barnegat Bay Dolphin WOW
I never expected this!
The Sun is shining, the sky is a beautiful Blue and the air is chilly, just a typical winter Monday morning in February on the Barnegat Bay in Beach Haven West between Mill Creek andJennifer Lane. That was until, I stepped outside to see a dolphin swimming in front of my Dock. What a way to start a Monday morning! The township officials were called and brought in animal control to see that the dolphin be treated and returned to the open waters.
The Marine Mammal Stranding Center:
MMSC is a Private Non-Profit Organization based in Brigantine, NJ. Since the center opened in 1978, there have been over 3,610 calls for stranded whales, dolphins, seals and turtles that have washed ashore onNew Jerseybeaches. These animals range anywhere from a 5lb Sea Turtle to a 25-ton Humpback whale.
In 2005, the MMSC has responded to 224 stranded animals in NJ. As the years pass, there is a steady increase in sightings of marine mammal and sea turtles that have been reported. Species such as harp, hooded and ringed seals and green sea turtles add to the MMSC’s growing numbers.
ALL sightings of marine mammals and sea turtles must be reported immediately to theMarineMammalStrandingCenterat 609-266-0538 with a specific location, and if possible latitude and longitude. The MMSC asks that you never feed, harass or come into contact with any wild marine mammals.
